THE GIANT IS DOWN!

By Agbortem Jean
I was watching a film and there was a powerful giant in the film who will stop at nothing but to destroy his enemies and protect his owns. He was so brave that he could do any thing he wanted but he wasn’t troublesome. But this giant had his weak point; whenever he sleeps, you can do anything around him without him hearing. And his enemies exploited this weakness to some extend.
Sampson was such a brave judge of Israel and God was with him in every battle he fought. And victory was always on his side. He was not like any other man; he was particular. He was a giant! Yet he fell in the hands of his enemies; the Philistine. Why he fell is our point of focus.
Sampson went to Gaza and saw a prostitute and entered where she was. Judges 16. Just like in our today’s society where we have places reserve for prostitutes. He went into this place and fell in love with this prostitute called Delilah. She was a Philistine woman. This happened after the Philistines have been looking for means to get him and each time they failed. Delilah was the only way to get him. And they said to her; “Charm him and find out where he gets such strength and how we can defeat and tie him up. Each of us shall give you eleven hundred pieces of silver." Knowing fully well that she was a prostitute, (that is a woman who sells her body for money), they knew that if they propose paying her such a huge some of money she will succumb to their demands. And this woman charmed Sampson and he did tell him his true secret, "Never has my hair been cut for I am a Nazirite, consecrated to God from the womb of my mother. If my hair is cut, then I shall lose my strength and be like any other man."
He exposed himself to Delilah and she handed him to his enemies. And so the mighty Sampson, fell in the hands of his enemies. He became an amusement to his enemies. God was no longer with him. The giant fell and his eyes were chopped off though he died a hero because the Bible tells us that he killed many people in his dying moment than he did when he was alive.
We are all giants as Christians and we must understand this fact. We are also dedicated to God just like Sampson was by virtue of our baptism and we are called to keep this vows by not doing what is contrary to it. But like Sampson, we may sometimes fall if we do not keep to what God has asked us.
What brought Sampson down is his going into the place where the prostitutes were. Jg 16:1. Why did he enter that house for God’s sake? This was his stumbling block. Could he not avoid going there knowing fully that he was in the land of his enemies?
At times we find ourselves doing the same error Sampson did. We expose ourselves to the enemy (Satan) knowing very well that he just need that occasion to let us down. Sampson was not watchful as the Bible say in 1st Peter 5:8.
We must understand that we are not to expose ourselves to the devil by doing those things that will be our weaknesses. Stay away from Delilah and you shall be saved from the Philistine! A Christian must stay away from those things that pushes him to sin. We know ourselves as Christian and we know those things that can bring us down. For example, if going to a beer parlour will make you drink and get drunk, then don’t go there. And so on. We may say it doesn’t matter but it does because the Bible tells us that there are ways that seem right in our eyes but the end of it is dead. Pv 16:25.
When he revealed his secret to Delilah God was no longer with him Jg 16:20. Each time we go out of our Christian territory, we are left alone and like Sampson, the enemy will take hold of us and makes us his victims. God help us!
Stay away from that which will make you fall as a giant by being vigilant as a Christian Amen.
